Dear Thurgood Marshall Community,
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Ebonisha Washington has been selected as the new principal for Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. Dr. Washington is an educational leader committed to building student-centered schools grounded in equity, belonging, and authentic relationships. With leadership experience spanning middle school, high school, and alternative learning environments, she believes that all work in education must begin and end with young people.

She also earned a Master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis from Arizona State University and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Western Washington University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Washington has served as an assistant principal and interim principal in Northshore School District, a 5th grade teacher & BCBA in Arizona, an Academic Interventionist/3rd &5th grade teacher/paraeducator in Seattle Public Schools. Her leadership is rooted in visibility, collaboration, restorative practices, and a deep belief in the power of relationships to transform school culture and student outcomes.
Known for her student-first approach, Dr. Washington prioritizes creating spaces where every student feels seen, valued, and supported. She believes strong schools are built through collective efficacy, high expectations paired with radical love, and meaningful partnerships with staff, students, and families.
Originally from California, Dr. Washington brings warmth, authenticity, and creativity into both her leadership and personal life. She loves the beach, enjoys writing poetry, and is an avid sneaker collector. Outside of school, she is also a proud wife, mother, and grandmother who values community, connection, and service.
Thank you to Principal Julie Breidenbach for her leadership as principal at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School for the past year. Dr. Washington is committed to building on the strong foundation Principal Breidenbach, and the Thurgood Marshall staff have created.
Dr. Washington is looking forward to working with Thurgood Marshall students, staff, families and community members to make a difference for each student, every day. Dr. Washinton’s official start date will be July 1.
Please join me in welcoming Dr. Washington to the Thurgood Marshall Elementary School community.
Sincerely,
